Health and Wellness

We help our clients access affordable and linguistically and culturally accessible physical and mental health services.

Asylum seekers and other forced migrants face many obstacles to accessing healthcare. Limited access to public benefits, cultural differences, language barriers, and a multitude of structural factors prevent them from getting the support they need to physically and mentally heal and begin to rebuild their lives.

Our services include:

  • Scheduling and accompanying clients to medical appointments
  • Orientations to the US healthcare system
  • Health and wellness classes
  • Connections to mental health services through our partnership with the Intercultural Counseling Connection
  • Group therapy or adult forced migrants facilitated by the Connection
  • Referrals to other trauma-informed healthcare providers
  • Access to routine medical care through the Health Care for the Homeless mobile clinic

AWE also partners with the HEAL Refugee Health and Asylum Collaborative to ensure our clients have access to trauma-informed, affirming healthcare, and supportive services. Services include:

  • The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Refugee Health Partnership. Small groups of medical students are linked with medically vulnerable AWE clients to help them navigate US healthcare systems.
  • Forensic evaluations. HEAL provides pro bono forensic medical-legal evaluations to asylum seeker, documenting their history of torture, persecution, or other ill treatment that may corroborate their claim for legal protection.
  • Medical care. HEAL provides direct primary care to survivors of torture and their families enrolled in AWE services, and who are otherwise unable to access healthcare due to barriers, such as inability to obtain health insurance.
  • Mental healthcare. HEAL provides onsite individual therapy services for children and families enrolled in AWE’s survivors of torture case management program. They also facilitate group therapeutic and psycho-educational services for trafficking survivor youth.
